Moses the Servant of the Lord
Moses a Prophet (inspired man – face to face communication)
“And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses, the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.” Deuteronomy 33:1
“So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord.” Deuteronomy 34:5
“And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.” Deuteronomy 34:10
“The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken.” Deuteronomy 18:15 (Speaking prophetically of the Lord Jesus Christ)
“By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.” Hebrews 11:23
(Faith will affect your family)
“By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of reward.” Hebrews 11:24-26
(Faith will change the focus of your life and give you direction and purpose)
“By faith, he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.” Hebrews 11:27
(Faith will give you boldness in the things of God)
“Through faith he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest He that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.” Hebrews 11:28
(Faith will result in obedience)
“By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.” Hebrews 11:29
(Faith will give you victory)
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is and that He is the rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6
(Faith will please God)
Moses’ Family – Exodus 2, Numbers 26:59
- Father – Amram and Mother – Jochebed of the tribe of Levi (characterized by faith)
- Brother – Aaron (high priest in things pertaining to God)
- Sister – Miriam the prophetess (inspired woman – by dream or vision)
- Wife – Zipporah
- Sons – Gershom & Eliezer
“Train up your child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
“Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17
Moses’ Call to Service – Exodus 3
- “God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, “Moses, Moses”” – prepared servant – 40 years in the palace – 40 years in the desert for 40 years of service
- “Here am I” – willing servant
- “Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.” – reverent servant
- “Come now therefore and I will send thee” – sent servant
- “Who am I” – humble servant
- “Bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt” – the servant’s work
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1
Moses’ Intercession – Exodus 32-33
- “And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, “Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people.”” 32:11
- “Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the Lord; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.” 32:30
- “And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, “Oh this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin —-: and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.” 32:31-32
(Moses’ willingness to take the place of the guilty – a beautiful picture of our Lord Jesus Christ)
“If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.” 33:16
“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men.” 1 Timothy 2:1
Moses’ Spoken Against – Numbers 12 and 16
- “And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married. And they said “Hath the Lord spoken by only by Moses? Hath he not spoken by us? And the Lord heard it.”
- “Wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against My servant Moses?”
- “And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them…and behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow.” (There will be consequences in evil speaking against the servant of the Lord)
- “And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, “Heal her now, O God, I beseech Thee.”
- “Dathan and Abiram…rose up before Moses, with certain of the princes of Israel…and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them: “Ye take too much upon you…wherefore lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?””
- “And Moses said, “Hereby ye shall know that the Lord hath sent me…the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up.” (God honours his servant)
- “On the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, “Ye have killed the people of the Lord.”
- “They that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred.”
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, will all malice.” Ephesians 4:31
“Speak not evil one of another, brethren.” James 4:11
Moses’ Strength yet Failure – Numbers 12 and 20
- “Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.”
- “The Lord spake unto Moses, saying, …speak ye unto the rock before their eyes and it shall bring forth water abundantly.”
- ““Hear now ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?” And Moses lifted up his hand and smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly”
- “The Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, “Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.”
“Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” 1 Peter 3:15
Moses’ Faithfulness in God’s House
- “And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and all the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it. And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.” Exodus 25:8,9,40
- “Moses verily was faithful in all His (God’s) house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after.” Hebrews 3:5
- “Who serve after the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for “See saith He, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.”” Hebrews 8:5
“These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly; but if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” 1 Timothy 3:14-15
