Context

  • Jesus informed His disciples He will be returning to the Father’s House resulting in troubled hearts
  • Concern despite His promise to return and bring to the Father
    • Thomas asks, “how can we know the way?”
    • Philip requests “show us the Father!”
    • Judas (not Iscariot) asks “how is it You will manifest Yourself unto us and not to the world”
  • “Let not your hearts be troubled” vs.1
    • Then gives reassuring promise after promise
  • Jesus bares the burden of responsibility for all entrusted to Him

 

Big Ideas

  • Comforter – Introduced to the Holy Spirit as the Comforter
    • His personality is emphasized, and His ministry is explained
    • “The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal influence, nor simply a wave of emotion pouring through the heart and mind, He is a divine Person” ~ HA Ironside
  • Communion – Reality of communion with divine persons confirmed
    • Intimate fellowship and implicit obedience are intrinsically connected
